Sustainable construction is a method of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. The goals of sustainable construction are to reduce the industry’s impact on the environment.
Sustainable construction methods include using renewable and recyclable materials, reducing the embodied energy in building materials, reducing the energy consumption of the finished building, reducing on-site waste, and protecting the natural habitats during and after the construction phase.
The construction industry accounts for an incredible 36% of worldwide energy usage, and 40% of CO2 emissions. The fabrication and shipping of materials can have a great impact on carbon emissions. Mining for raw materials can result in the pollution of water courses. Adopting sustainable construction methods is not an overnight process. The clients’ attitudes and available budget will be the most significant constraint or enabling factor.
The selection of contractor for the project will drive the work of all of the subsequent trades on the project. Bravery Construction is familiar with the latest thinking on net zero operational carbon, net zero embodied carbon, sustainable water cycle, sustainable connectivity and transport, sustainable land use and biodiversity.
DO NOT TEAR OFF THAT ROOF UNTIL YOU TALK TO US!
Bravery Constuction uses different color materials depending on the where the structure is located. White or lighter colors are utilized in hot areas to reflect the sun which reduces emissions and significantly reduces energy costs. Darker colors would be appropriate in colder areas to absorb the heat of the sun to reduce heating costs.
There are two ways to help cool a roof. First, a cool roof can reflect away sunlight, so it stays cooler. Such a roof is said to have a high solar reflectance. Second, a cool roof should also release or emit heat (infrared radiation) so it stays cool. Such a roof is said to have high thermal emittance. An ideal cool roof is a roof with both high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance.
Cool roofs have several benefits for both for building owners and the environment.

An extensive green roof is a lightweight, grass and plant covered rooftop with a shallow growing medium that helps insulate buildings, provide habitation and increase the roof’s lifespan.
They differ from intensive green roof counterparts in that they are low maintenance, lightweight and only support a small variety of flora and fauna.
An intensive green roof is a living roof capable of supporting much larger, more complex plant structures and designs than their extensive counterparts. Most commercial or larger scale residential projects are intensive. This is because most living roof projects of this type are designed to create gardens or walk-through habitats in urban areas.
Semi-intensive green roofs require a deeper soil layer, but the payoff is in the types of plantings that can be used. In addition to the mosses, grasses, and sedum of extensive roofs, semi-intensive plantings include herbs, flowering plants, taller grasses, and small shrubs.
A blue-green roof incorporates a sustainable drainage system (SuDS), which retains water following a downpour and manages how the water is dispersed to prevent the damaging run off. Commonly a green roof is installed above the blue roof – sometimes called a blue-green roof.
A blue roof is roof that is designed to collect rainwater as it falls, and then release this same rainwater slowly and steadily over a 24-hour period. This can be very helpful in areas where flooding and excess water are an issue.
Why not use that roof space to enjoy life? Pickle ball courts, basketball courts, running tracks, playgrounds, and sun decks are just a few ideas where Bravery Construction can work with owners to make this space into what we call - A LIFE ROOF!
